Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for the program?
The primary admission requirement is a diagnosis of mental retardation. Referrals generally are made through the State of Connecticut Department of Developmental Services.

Is there a minimum/maximum length of stay at a residence?
The length of stay for each person is contingent upon his or her ability level, personal development, and the availability of residential alternatives. There is no minimum or maximum length of stay.

How many residents live at each location?
There are two to six residents living at each of our ten sites.

Are there any age requirements or limitations for residents?
Yes. Residents must be at least 21 years of age. There is no maximum age limit.

What qualifications and training are required for staff?
We require staff to have a high school diploma, GED, or higher academic degree, a valid Connecticut driver’s license, professional references, and a strong interest in supporting people with developmental disabilities. We offer paid training in our offices to enable our staff to provide the necessary support for residents. This training includes, but is not limited to, certification in first aid/CPR, Medication Certification, medical awareness training, behavior management, and familiarization with the specific routines of the residents and home where they will be working.

Where are the residences located?
We operate homes in Bloomfield, Newington, New Britain, Farmington and Somers. A number of our homes are accessible by public transportation.

Do residents or staff need to be Catholic?
No. We accept residents regardless of religion, race, or ethnicity. We are an Equal Employment Opportunity employer and we welcome employment applications from all qualified individuals interesting in working with persons with developmental disabilities.

I’d like to help. What can I do?
Monetary Donations provide many of the "extras" for our residents, especially those individuals who do not have family. These "extras" include birthday and holiday parties and presents, and outings to the movies, the zoo, or sporting events. Your monetary gift or gift certificate enables residents to obtain new clothes, a new winter coat, personal grooming items, or visit a sick family member out of state. We also host an annual Pasta Dinner to benefit the residents of our homes and we will be happy to add your name to our mailing list.
