"Beat the Street" Asylum Hill Family Center

Program Description
The Asylum Hill Family Center was designed by parents and community residents of Asylum Hill as a vehicle to strengthen and empower families through family literacy, as well as to enhance the ability of parents/caregivers to improve the school readiness of their children. All of the programs, activities and services that are developed for members of the Family Center are implemented from one of the following categories.

•Dinner & A Story: Families participate in structured literacy activities together, share a meal together and participate in "family meeting" which is a purposeful discussion highlighting the activities that occurred that evening.
•Pre-School Play Yard: Preschoolers and their parents/caregivers participate in creative enrichment activities.
•L'il Artist on the Move: Utilizes literacy through the arts (dancing, drumming and singing) to encourage school readiness.
•What's Cookin' in Asylum Hill: Family Interaction using food preparation, cooking and consuming together where cooking is viewed as a shared family experience.
Family Center Café: An opportunity for families to engage in literary expression in the comfort of family fun.

•Women's Empowerment Group: A counseling and educational group in which the goal is to equip women with more skill sets to lead more empowered lives to benefit themselves and their children.
