Migration and Refugee Services

Frequently asked questions

How long have you been in operation?
Catholic Charities aided in the resettlement of Hungarians in the 1950's and responded to the large influx of "boat people" in the late 1970's. In response to the large numbers of refugee groups arriving in the United States from Asia and Eastern Europe, Catholic Charities /Migration and Refugee Services became a separate program in May of 1975.

How are you funded?
Catholic Charities/Migration and Refugee Services is an affiliate of the United States Catholic Conference/Migration and Refugee Services, which is contracted by the United States Department of State to resettle refugees. We are funded by both public and private sources including church, corporate and private foundations, and individual donations.

From what countries have you resettled refugees?
Refugees successfully resettled by Catholic Charities/Migration and Refugee Services have come from Vietnam, Laos (including Hmong), Cambodia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, Somalia, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Poland, Bulgaria, Russia, Ukraine, Belorussia, Tadzhikistan, Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Haiti, Sierra Leone, Kosovo, Cuba, Croatia, and Yugoslavia. Most current refugees are now arriving from Bosnia, the Sudan, Afghanistan, Iraq, and the former Soviet Union.

I'd like to help; what can I do?

  • How you can help refugees: We always need your time as a mentor or tutor of English, your assistance in our office, your donations of food and toiletries, and your assistance as an interpreter.
  • Donations: Your monetary support is always welcome.
