How do I find a family?

Just as a birthparent works with a social worker at Catholic Charities to determine if adoption is a good plan, potential adoptive parents work with THEIR own social worker to assess their ability and readiness to adopt. This is done through an educational and evaluative process known as a homestudy.

Once a family has successfully completed their homestudy and becomes licensed, each and every potential adoptive family creates a picture biography. This "profile" of the family usually includes a "Dear Birthmother" letter that explains the motivation to adopt, talks about family and social life, and describes a couple’s desire to become parents.

Birthparents interested in adoption are given these profiles to read. It then becomes each birthparent’s decision whether or not to meet a specific family.

Birthparents are drawn to one family over another for a myriad of reasons – and birthparents are exceedingly good at choosing just the right family for their child.
