Youth

New Haven Project APOYO

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for the program?
Our services are available to Latino youthful offenders ( male only) between the ages of 16-21 who reside in the Greater New Haven Area and who can benefit from a culturally and linguistically specific community-based program as an alternative to incarceration.

How are youth referred to the program?
Referrals are made through the Office of Adult Probation and the Office of the Bail Commission. Referrals frequently are initiated at the request of judges, defense counsel, and states attorneys. Referrals can be made at the time of arraignment, pre-trial, bond modification, sentencing, or in lieu of violation of probation.

What are your hours of operation?
Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Tuesday and Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Do you offer follow-up services?
Upon successful completion of the primary phase of the program (approximately 6 months), clients can remain involved (either mandated by their referral source or on a volunteer basis and approved by their referral source) in our follow-up and aftercare component for an additional 6 months, during which time they can receive additional support services as they transition back into the community.

How are you funded?
Funding for this program is provided by the Court Support Services Division (CSSD), Judicial Branch, State of Connecticut, and through charitable donations.  We are grateful for the in-kind services throughout the years of the New Haven Board of Education, Hispanos Unidos, and Workforce Alliance.

How are you accredited?
Project APOYO is accredited by the Council on Accreditation, Services for Family and Children and licensed by the Department of Health Services, State of Connecticut, Department of Children and Families. We are a member agency of the United Way of Greater New Haven, Branford United Way, Guilford Community Fund, and the National Conference of Catholic Charities.
