Hartford Street Youth Project

Peer Leadership Program

An opportunity for youth to participate in an empowering and productive experience. The program concentrates on developing strong leadership skills, promotes community involvement, and addresses problems faced by the Hartford community.

This program runs for 13 weeks and is open to boys and girls in the 4th through 7th grades.

Peer leadership highlights:

  • Conflict resolution
Leaders learn skills that allow them to resolve conflicts in a non-violent manner.

  • Personal growth
Leaders learn skill-building exercises, including assertiveness training, anger management, goal attainment, decision making, self-esteem enhancement, and empathy skills.

  • Community service project
Students work from four to six weeks addressing a solvable problem that will help make a real change in their community.

  • Leader to leader
Youth spend a day shadowing an experienced community leader in order to gain a role model’s perspective on ways to positively impact their community.

  • Adventure-based activities
Youth leaders participate in an overnight team event at Camp Jewell. There also are two field trips, exciting after-school activities, and an adventure-based program that will challenge and thrill youth.

  • Citywide youth council
Youth have the opportunity to participate in a citywide council of youth leaders.
