Program
Description
Asylum
Hill Family Center is part of the Brighter Futures Initiative of the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. It is designed by parents and community residents of Asylum Hill as a vehicle to strengthen and empower families through family literacy, as well as to enhance the ability of parents/caregivers to improve the school readiness of their children.
Services Provided
Some of the programs, activities and services offered include:
Parent/Child
Interaction
•Dinner & A Story: Families participate in structured literacy
activities together, share a meal together and participate in "family
meeting," which is a purposeful discussion highlighting the activities
that occurred that evening.
•Pre-School
Play Yard: Preschoolers and their parents/caregivers participate in
creative enrichment activities.
Parent
Support & Development
•A site of the Nurturing Families Network, a program of the Department of Social Services, Children's Trust Fund
•Family Enrichment Services, a program of the Department of Children and Families
Health and Wellness
•Fitness/Health and Wellness programming such as Zumba classes
Services to Supportive Housing
•Cathedral Green, a supportive housing facility, takes a community-based approach to service as each family is able to receive support from Catholic Charities Asylum Hill Family Center located several blocks away. Services provided to residents will include parenting skill building, advocacy/ empowerment, job training and support, homeownership training, money management/budgeting classes, peer support groups, marital/couple counseling, group counseling, medical evaluations, individual counseling, and child support services.
Connecting
Families to the Community
•Family Chat: Provides families with workshops on community resources
and training on a variety of topics including parenting, health and nutrition,
HUSKY health insurance, child development, child care, money management, cultural diversity, as well as other topics requested by parents.
•Computer Lab and Adult Education Classes
Eligibility
The programs and services of the Family Center are open to all regardless of religion, race, income or marital status.
