International Adoption

For individuals or couples wishing
to adopt a child or children
born outside the United States.

Catholic Charities provides a full spectrum
of services to individuals and couples who are
pursuing international adoption.

Step-by-step guide to international adoption

We work with adoptive parent(s) to explore options, assess present and future risk, inform them about international adoption issues, and to identify resources within their community that can be called upon to maximize the success of the adoption before and after placement of a child in their home.

Members of any faith or denomination are welcome to adopt through Catholic Charities. We require only that prospective parent(s) have a sense of spirituality and be active participants in some religion. Each country has established individual criteria for adopting their children and one of our experienced adoption counselors will help you identify these criteria.

Individuals and/or families working with Catholic Charities can choose to pursue an adoption from any country that has an established international network. Some of the countries from which children have been adopted are China, Korea, India, Cambodia, Vietnam, Central and South America, Morocco, South Africa, Lithuania, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Romania, Haiti, and Kazakhstan.

Catholic Charities will assist you to identify an international placing agency that has a program in the country of your choice. We then work collaboratively with that agency to meet the requirements of your child’s country of birth and to provide post-placement supervision and reports.

Catholic Charities provides the following international adoption services:

  • Completion of homestudy
  • Review of your dossier (consists of documents required by your child’s country of birth)
  • Coordination of your referral to an international placing agency
  • Liaison work with placing agency
  • Post-placement supervision
