Catholic Charities Archdiocese of Hartford Statement on COVID-19
For many of us, in times of uncertainty our instinct is to do something.
As we confront COVID-19, it can be difficult to reconcile the impulse to take action with the need to accept that we are not in control.
Still, always remember the positive things that we can do, for our communities and ourselves.
First, some important information about the virus itself:
The best ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19 are:
- Washing hands often with soap and water
- Avoiding close contact with people who are sick (and staying clear of others if you are sick — including staying home from work)
- Covering coughs and sneezes (try coughing or sneezing into your elbow)
- Disinfecting surfaces
As we all adjust to a new reality, we can also make an extra effort to choose kindness, patience, and helpfulness:
- Check in regularly with elderly family members and neighbors.
- Share responsibilities of childcare if a school or childcare center has to close temporarily.
- Practice self-care. Remember, you will be in the best position to care for yourself and others if you make your own physical and mental health a priority.
Together, along with our partners and with the guidance of authorities, we will make decisions about when it may be appropriate to postpone or suspend programs or gatherings. These efforts are active and ongoing.
Catholic Charities clients, we will continue to be here for you in the days and weeks ahead. Some programs and services will have to change and adapt. For all clients, please reach out when you need us. Our work will continue, even when we must all be adaptable and flexible.
We are in this together.
