Rhinos take it to the hoop in New Haven league

Go Rhinos!

You’re probably wondering who — or what — are the Rhinos. That’s a basketball team from our afterschool program at Centro San Jose Family Center that plays in the New Haven Alternative Basketball League.

The league plays games in May and early June at Hillhouse High School in New Haven and provides a fun, competitive opportunity for teens who don’t play for their high schools and students who attend schools too small to field teams at the public school level. The Rhinos are the only team not directly aligned with a school and players attend various schools.

The Rhinos are coached by Angel Franyutti, who is the Youth Program Coordinator at Centro San Jose in the Fair Haven neighborhood of New Haven, and finished the regular season first in the standings, meaning they received a bye in the first round of the tournament.

Update: The Rhinos won the league championship June 6 after beating High School in the Community in the final. Way to go, Rhinos!
